| Garden Layout - Spring Bulbs - Snowdrops
|
|
| Of all the spring bulbs, this one, surely, needs no introduction. The single snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis, for many of us gardeners, the very first herald of spring. Is it possible to have too many snowdrops? In late January, when all else in the garden is bare and dead, these impossibly delicate nodding bells emerge from cold damp ground to confirm that all is not lost and that winter does not mean an ending, just a new beginning. I have quite a few drifts of them dotted around both the front and back garden as they are definitely a flower that looks better in company than as solitary specimens. Every few years I split them up and spread them around the garden, extending existing drifts and creating new ones. Snowdrops are always best planted or moved 'in the green', ie, just after flowering when the plant is still active and will quickly settle in to its new home. |
