| Garden Layout - Spring Bulbs - Hyacinths
|
|
| If you look carefully at the layout plan for my bulbs, you'll notice that all the hyacinths seem to be grouped in threes. This is because they all started their life with me as 'Prepared' hyacinths, specially treated for indoor flowering. Each year, I make up a 250mm diameter shallow terracotta bowl with 3 prepared hyacinths which are then grown on inside the house, to fill the living room with their heady scent from Christmas onwards. After they've flowered, they get planted out somewhere in the garden, and that's why they appear as groups on the layout plan. This is a mixed group originally grown indoors in the winter of 97-98. They've been here since the spring of 1997, and this is them flowering for the fourth sucessive year. The flowerheads are not as dense as they once were, but they're still heavenly scented and worthy of their place. Don't be fooled by the odd-looking foliage on the picture opposite - that belongs to the Lupins which are just coming back to life. |
