| Garden Layout - Plants - Grasses
| There are a number of grasses dotted around the garden, and I am planning to expand my collection in the coming year with the creation of a special area for selected grasses within the Millennium bed. At the moment, most of them are small plants, not worthy of photographing, but I will add to this page as and when they mature. | |
| This is, I think, Holcus mollis, but if anyone knows differently, then please let me know. The blades are green and white, vertically striped, with pale green stems. It is a perennial that spreads itself by a convoluted root system, but does not become too invasive. It reaches a height of about 450mm in mid-spring, and, when the winter returns, I usually leave the blades in place as the dried, brown leaves look quite good when most other plants are hiding from the cold. It's shade tolerant and new plants can be raised by simple division of the root system, and this division seems to work at any time of the year. From the original 75mmpot, I now have 6 individual clumps of this grass at various locations throughout the garden. The photo shows the grass in the rockery, but I also have clumps planted in the front garden, the western trellis and a few clumps dotted in the Woodland Glade. |
