| Garden Layout - Plants - Dicentra
| Is there a better spring-flowering plant for a shady spot that Dicentra spectabilis? If there is, I've yet to come across it. I knew as soon as I decided to convert what had been a scrappy lawn into the rockery, that it simply had to have a Dicentra as a focal point. | |
| The plants nestles between two large blocks of limestone, and is one of the first to emerge in early spring, throwing up new shoots from the ever-spreading base. By April, it stands about 750mm high, with a spread of about 1m2 and it's branches arch with the sheer number of pink and white heart-shaped flowers, which last until early summer. The foliage continues throughout the growing season, but is cut back during the winter to allow space and light for the following season's growth. |

| I have a fancy for the pure white form, D. spectabilis alba, but I'm not convinced that there is room in the rockery for them both. I might be tempted to use a white form in a shdy part of the expanded western trellis bed. | |
