| Garden Layout - Chives Box
| This is a wooden cube planter I built from surplus treated timber gravel boards. One of the problems of having such a small garden is the lack of space for vegetables. However, there are some essential veg that can be grown in small areas and that is the purpose of this planter. | |
| It's filled with a very free-draining medium consisting of 1 part top soil with 1 part compost and 1 part grit sand, and is planted with chives, garlic chives and garlic. The chives are an essential ingredient for mashed potato, the garlic chives are ideal for salads and the garlic is used in all sorts of cookery. None of them crop heavily, but do keep us going through the summer. | ![]() |
| It's a very simple variation on the more elegant Versaille Planters, often sold in kit form at the DIY sheds, but costs a fraction of their price. During the summer, I disguise the box and my crude carpentry skills by planting alyssum or lobelia cascade in 32mm diameter holes drilled into the sides. | |
