| Garden Layout - More Dangly Baskets
|
|
| Here's a few more pictures of summer baskets I made up for 2000. Having the Millennium Greenhouse means I can get my baskets prepared and planted up that much earlier, and I reckon it certainly pays off, as baskets look more established and 'full' when it comes to the Feast of All Planting Out at the end of May. |

The picture above shows a small, 300mm diameter basket planted up with Pelargonium Fischer, Lobelia Cascade Mix and Pansies. The Ivy-leaf 'Fischer' is at its best from mid-summer onwards.

Opposite is a purple-themed basket, planted up with Nemesia 'Confetti', Million Bells and Lobelia Cascade Mix. Both of these baskets were suspended from the side of the house alongside the driveway, which is shaded for part of the day, but both did very well, despite the poor summer, and I'll certainly be using the Nemesia again - flowers right through from April until November, and so easy to take cuttings! |

This yellow-themed 400mm diameter basket hung from the wall just inside the garden gate. I'm a big fan of Bidens ferulifoliae as a basket plant, but it can crowd out other plants. Here, I've mixed it with Pot Marigolds to give a range of yellow hues throughout the summer and well into autumn.

This basket, hanging from the corner of the house next to the patio is a bit of a mixture. No real colour scheme, just a wish to get as many different colours, flower sizes and foliage styles as possible. Along with the inevitable Nemesia 'Confetti' and Lobelia Cascade Mix, there are nasturtiums, Million Bells 'Cherry', a red and white zonal pelargonium, and Fuchsia 'Happy Wedding Day'. |
| Finally, a late winter basket. These baskets are designed to see me through from late October right up to the end of April, and so a good range of plants need to be used. As Autumn turns to winter, the basket will have cyclamen and ornamental cabbages, which fade as we enter a new year, by which time, the iris reticulata and snowdrops will be emerging. As they in turn pass their peak in mid-February, the dwarf daffodils and primroses take over and a couple of pansies or violas can be added to the basket to provide colour right into the warmer days of spring. The ivies and cineraria provide continual background, whatever the season. |
