| Garden Layout - Spring Bulbs - Alliums
| I suppose it's a bit of a cheat to include these late Spring-early Summer flowers in with the more traditional spring bulbs, but that's how I think of them as they come in right at the tail-end of the main bulb-flowering season. There's all sorts of exotic looking alliums, but I don't really have the space to do them justice, so I have this solitary clump of a simpe yellow flowered variety that resides in the patio bed, where it basks in the full sunshine of that time of year.

Each stem carries an abundance of these tiny flowers which last for 2-3 weeks, by which time the rest of the summer flowers have taken over and it loses itself in amongst that lot, but it provides a cheerful preamble to the coming riot of colour planned for June and July. Like all alliums, it really needs a sun-baked spot like this to perform. I tried some in a shadier corner of the garden one year and they did next to nothing, so they were quickly shifted back to this, their original spot. |
