| Garden Layout - Water Cascade
|
|
| The Water Cacade was designed and built by myself, converting what had been the childrens' sand pit into a rather pleasant, yet simple water feature. | |
| There is a construction detail drawing of this water feature on the Build It page. The 'sump' is a manhole section, sunk into the ground on a solid concrete base, and the steps are formed from reclaimed york stone flags, supported on reclaimed granite setts. The pump is a small 600 litres per hour machine, powered by a cable that leads back to the nearest electricity supply, in the shed. The edge of the feature is paved with red clay paviors, and the pebbles help to conceal the 'gap' where the water trickles back to the sump for recirculating. The rest of the paving is reclaimed york stone, which keeps the 'natural' look and provides a home to mosses and algae. |

| This is a well sheltered but shady spot in my garden. The Oaks over the back of the fence keep most of the sun off, although there is a very pleasant dappling effect in the late afternoon, with shifting patterns of light dancing on the thousands of different shades of green, and picking up the occasional splash of colour from the Astilbes and Hostas. | |
![]() Summer 1998 and the whole feature has matured. |
All of the plants grown here are shade dwellers, but the lushness of the Castor Oil plant combines with the toothed leaves of the Sambucus to give a 'tropical' feel, picked up by the ferns, and enhanced by the echoing of water as it drips back into the underground sump. The small Japanese Maple is well-protected from damaging early morning sun, and so tends to do well here, giving a lovely dark burgundy hue as a foil to the other planting, and the Hostas come into their own in early summer, only to be superceded by the feathery colours of the three Astilbes, a red, a white and a pink one. |
| When the sun beats down on the patio in high summer, and the air is still and muggy, this is the perfect spot for sitting in a chair with a can of Dr. Boddington's finest and letting the heat of the day pass you by. | |

| This is a scale diagram of the layout of the cacade. Passing your mouse over each plant will result in the name of the plant being displayed on your status bar. Clicking on any of these hotspots will take you to the page dedicated to that plant.
