The Millennium Greenhouse

The Millennium Greenhouse has been a long-term ambition of mine that became reality in late November of 1999. It had taken me over 12 months of scrimping and saving to raise the money required to buy the 2.4m x 1.8m, aluminium-framed, real-glass, dream-come-true. I built a 200mm high concrete block base, over the existing concrete base and topped this base with tanalised timber battens, to seat the greenhouse upon. Only one pane of glass was broken during the 2-day construction.

Millennium Greenhouse
In Winter Having the Millennium Greenhouse means I can get an early start to my dangly baskets and other summer bedding, and it also enables me to indulge in my passion for fuchsias. I've lined it with bubblewrap as insulation for the winter, and there is a small electric heater that is set to 'frost watch', so the temperature over the cold spell should never drop below 5°C.
The absence of frost in the Millennium Greenhouse means I can overwinter my fuchsias and keep cuttings of lots of other summer basket favourites that previously had to be crammed onto the north-facing bay window in the front room. It also gives an early start to my seed sowings and allows me to grow chilli peppers during the summer.
