| Garden Layout - The Fence Border
|
|
| The fence flower bed was created as part of the on-going policy of reclaiming more and more of the garden for flowers and foliage, as the kids get older and cause less damage, mainly by shoving off and playing elsewhere. | |
| This bed is 300mm higher than Bert-next-door's garden just over the 600mm high (on my side) Waney Lap fence, and the concrete base panel holds up the soil, to stop it disappearing into his garden. All the soil was dug out to a depth of 400mm, passed through a 6mm riddle, and then mixed 2 parts sieved soil to 1 part grit sand and 1 part spent trough and pot compost. It is very free draining, and the only thing I add is more spent compost each year, working it in if a space becomes available, and before planting something new. | ![]() The stunning, frilly flowered Leucanthemum superbum - Phyllis Smith |
| The edging is simply a red clay pavior, 100mm wide, laid directly onto the soil beneath. This may be contrary to almost everything I say on my paving web-site, but there is no need for lime-shedding concrete in this part of the garden, and I'm quite happy to do the odd bit of 'levelling up' each year, and it is a boon when it comes to mowing the lawn and trimming the edges. | |

In 1998, the bed was completed so that it ran all the way from the patio bed right up to the waterfall paving. The Lupins and another Delphinium, "Magic Fountain" were planted, along with the fuchsias, osteospermums and the neat little edging plants of alternating sapphire blue and royal purple. The whole bed is underplanted with a mixture of daffodils and tulips, for a burst of colour in Spring before the perennial foliage takes over. |

| This is a scale diagram of the layout of part of the lawn and the fence flower bed. Passing your mouse over each plant will result in the name of the plant being displayed on your status bar. Clicking on any of these hotspots will take you to the page dedicated to that plant. | |
